Die Whirlpool-Galaxie (M 51, NGC 5194\/5195, Strudelgalaxie, Strudelnebel) ist eine grosse Spiralgalaxie welche etwa 25 Millionen Lichtjahre von unserer Milchstrasse entfernt im Sternbild Jagdhunde ist.<\/p>\n

Besonders interessant an diesem Objekt ist die nahe, wechselwirkende Begleitgalaxie.<\/p>\n

In der Whirlpool-Galaxie findet eine aussergew\u00f6hnlich aktive Sternentstehung statt, diese wird vermutlich durch die Gezeitenwechselwirkung mit der Begleitgalaxie verursacht. Daher hat es in der Galaxie eine hohe Anzahl junger und massereicher Sterne, die aber mit einigen Millionen Jahren relativ kurzlebig sein werden.<\/p>\n

Innerhalb der Whirlpool-Galaxie wurden innerhalb von 17 Jahren drei Supernovae beobachtet (April 1994, Juni 2005 und Mai\/Juni 2011).<\/p>\n

Entdeckt wurde die Galaxie am 13. Oktober 1773 vom franz\u00f6sischen Astronomen Charles Messier.<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder\n
